Distinguished and Famous people from Ocean Grove
🏉 Clint Bartram
Clint Bartram played junior football at Leopold and then Ocean Grove before progressing through the Geelong Falcons to Melbourne. Recalling those years, he remembered a run of junior premierships and a decision to keep him out of senior football because of his slight build and emerging representative prospects. Drafted in 2005, he debuted for Melbourne the following season. His account places the local club inside the decisions and development behind a professional career. The eventual AFL player had once been the youngster protected from bigger bodies while his coaches watched what he might become.
🏟️ Danny Stanley
Danny Stanley progressed from Ocean Grove through the Geelong under-eighteen system to Collingwood and then Gold Coast. He played in the Suns’ first AFL season in 2011 and finished with eighty-three senior appearances for that club. His path makes Ocean Grove part of the early football history of a player later associated with a new Queensland team. A local contemporary, Clint Bartram, remembered Stanley in recalling the physical risks of stepping into senior country football as a teenager. Their parallel careers connect a Bellarine junior setting with quite different destinations in the national competition.
🎨 Sidney Nolan
Sidney Nolan lived briefly at Ocean Grove with his first wife Elizabeth, a graphic designer, after their marriage in 1938. The Reeds, John and Sunday, visited frequently and continued to encourage his artistic development. A commission to design backdrops and costumes for the Ballets Russes production Icare followed, before his first solo exhibition in Melbourne in 1940. The Ocean Grove period belongs to the early career of an artist later celebrated for his Ned Kelly paintings. It is a documented home on the Bellarine Peninsula, not a claim that the famous Kelly series was painted there.
